Happy New Year from Revmatch

If you’re reading this then the chances are it’s already 2017 and if you’re anything like me then you may well be nursing a hangover. Good on you. Anyway, I’m using this post as a quick opportunity to reflect over the past year and also to thank everyone that’s supported the site since its introduction in March of 2016.

This year, I’ve published around 60 varied posts to the Revmatch site, some have been very popular and others not so much. Despite this, I’ve been continually surprised at how engaged my readers have been with some of the things I’ve chosen to write about – I’ve even been lucky enough to receive some fan mail, and of course, some trolling too.

Blogging about cars has never been a more popular thing to do; yet the arrival of Drivetribe and the dominance of other bigger sites mean that it’s more a labour of love than ever before. It’s little surprise then, that 2016 has seen the closure of several brilliant publications including my personal favourite motoring blog.

The 2017 plan

Having trialed various article types and ideas I’ve come to a few conclusions regarding what I’ll be doing more and less of in the future.

Out with the listicle

Listicles, or list style articles will already dominate your social media newsfeeds.

Car Throttle’s recent “5 Reasons Why It’s Time For Diesel Cars To Die” is a perfect example.

Favourited by the biggest sites, they’re an easy way to get hits and yet, more often than not, they’re soulless, badly researched and quickly composed. They’re not what I’m about and for that reason they’ve no longer got a place on Revmatch.

Lazy press release turnarounds

Ever notice how you see the same news on several websites? Often with the same pictures and sometimes even the same text. Well, it’s simply not good enough in my book.

Quite simply, I refuse to hastily rewrite press releases. I will use original copy and images wherever possible.

 Moving pictures, more people and no adverts

For 2017 I’d like to start working with video, that’s going to involve a lot of homework and some extra kit from my end but it’s something I’ve wanted to target for a long time.

Posting regularly to the site is not easy, particularly alongside a full time job and other commitments, and for that reason I’ll be looking to work with more people in 2017. Expect quality contributions from fellow car lovers who already write for a living.

Overall, these decisions have been made because I want to create a good website rather than a big website.

I’d also like to thank everyone that has got behind Revmatch to date. From the site itself to the small but very active Facebook page, it’s clear that there’s a growing appetite for such a site and I endeavour to keep providing what you shall hopefully want to see.
